I just found this story by accident. I had to sit and openly cry. I can't believe that any mother would be so unfeeling and cruel. Immune to her child's cry? I hope she rots in hell. It's inhumane. I find this kind of senseless pain unforgiveable. This poor child. I feel so much pain for her I just can't stand it. How senselss and horrible. The same should be done to all the people who sat there while she cried out in agony and they didn't do anything for her. I just can't stand it. I can hardly bear the thought of it.

Okay - so we've overindulged our child who has been diagnosed with conduct disorder AND Bipolar Disorder. We are on overload - not sure which way to go with her treatment. She's in a residential treatment facility and they have recommended long term treatment - is there any way to undo the damage our overindulgence(?) has done?

Thanks so much for your comments. You're absolutely correct, of course. I'm sure a denial of responsibility will first come from a claim of religious freedom, but mental illness or mental deficiency is always there as a backup. As I said in my post, it was murder, it is murder, and those who care about children should see it clearly as a horrendously tortured way for a child to die. Requiring a small child to mimic an adult saying any phrase--yes, even "Amen"--is so ludicrous that it would be laughable were it not for the fact that Javon is now dead. Would have his soul now be resting any easier had he repeated, "Amen"? I don't think so.

I'm not sure that the mother will need to claim mental illness or brainwashing in this case. In the US a great many things are permissible, so long as they're part of a religious observance. The Texas Supreme Court declared this explicitly, a short time ago (http://www.agnostic-library.com/ma/2008/06/29/freedom-of-religion-or-freedom-to-harm-in-texas/) and in most other states, "religious freedom" is interpreted similarly.

[...] Medical Health Care wrote an interesting post today onHere’s a quick excerpt Mental health care is difficult to provide; inpatient mental health care is even more so. There is never enough money, the need is great, and there are just not enough people who want to provide that kind of care. Having worked in this system for so long, therefore, it came as no surprise to me to read about the current storm brewing over the care provided by Georgia’s state-run psychiatric hospitals in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Savannah Morning News.
